What to Expect From Therapy
Once you have had a phone consultation with your preferred therapist and identified that both you and the therapist would be a good fit for your goals, your therapy journey will begin. You will work with your therapist in identifying your goals. If you are unsure about what your goals are, the therapist will work with you by gathering the information shared in your first few sessions and will guide you in having more clarity on what your goals are for therapy.
Building trust with your therapist is important and therapists understand that sometimes clients are not ready to talk about certain topics. It is okay to let your therapist know that you need more time or need to build rapport with your therapist. Throughout your therapy journey, you will learn tools to identify unhelpful or ineffective thinking patterns or behaviors. You may also learn some tools to help you challenge or manage those thinking patterns or behaviors.
Your therapist will observe the information shared in sessions, will bring to the client’s attention when the client might be avoiding something or fear is getting in the way. The therapist will challenge the client to confront this. Again, if you do not feel ready, it is okay to express this to your therapist. Occasionally, some therapists will provide homework for deeper understanding and processing in between sessions.
Once therapy goals are met, the client and the therapist will reflect on whether other goals need to be implemented in treatment or if therapy services should be terminated.
